Vintage Rules

A long time ago I made the surprisingly easy decision to stick to buying vintage and second hand only. As you might have guessed, there are several exceptions:

• Underwear - will buy new but keep on the pulse of what fabric is being traded fairly, who runs the company and is it quality built to last?

• Workout gear, where I apply the above philosophy unless it’s second hand new.

• Is the clothing or furniture locally made, artisan made, independently made, contributing to greater good - an example of this being the linen robes I purchase from Sunday Morning who pledge 10% of their profits to build homes in developing countries through New Story.

Everything we desire, already exists in one form or another. And often - better quality vintage than new. Falling into that bracket is clothing and furniture. If you’re “into fashion” it’s quite possible you can be swayed to favour style and tailoring over trends. We all know someone who has style and often the primer of such style, is the way it fits. Then comes their well chosen selection of colours and textures, and to tie it all together – signature jewelry and/or tattoos and hairstyle that etch them fondly into your memories. You are undoubtedly etched into someone’s memory without the faintest idea…

In these journal entries, I’m going to attempt to take a piece of clothing that feels seasonally essential, write about it, reference iconic examples and then deliver some links to vintage or second hand pieces I’ve sourced online. I hope this will be a fun installment for you to tune into each week and that you get into the swing of falling in love with your style, your closet and the feeling of not buying anything new.
